Second Life content creators save lives, one net (and one eyeball) at a time

Cutea Benelli and Blotto Epsilon, co-creators of the ultra fabulous Bogon Flux (which is no longer rezzed, but just you wait! More news on that front), together with avatar creator Barney Boomslang, have released the strange eyestem thingie for sale, and it is to benefit nothingbutnets.net, the organization that saves lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa.



Even if you aren't buying, why not drop a few Lindens on their vendor?

Gary Kohime is a kind soul with a BIG heart and an artist, too. Someone he loves very much is ill with cancer, and he has coordinated an auction/fundraiser and party today to benefit cancer research via the American Cancer Society. An ACS donation box will be placed at the auction site by Catt Gable of the American Cancer Society to receive auction monies and any other donations.

In the spirit of the season, and the community we all enjoy, please help Gary to get the word out far and wide... and come to the party with deep pockets :)

The event will take place today, December 20, 2008, between 4 - 6pm SLT at the SS Galaxy - Zodiac Ballroom; teleport directly from here.
Music will be streamed by DJ Gary Kohime; Attire: Formal.

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry at Relay for Life

There is so much to see and do this weekend at the Second Life® Relay for Life (RFL) event. More than 80 teams have come together to create a unique experience for participants with the goal of raising $125,000 US.

A walkathon relay is about to get underway in a few minutes and will run from July 19th at 10am SLT through July 20th at 11am SLT. The track, spanning 96 acres, will take you past wildly imaginative and informative builds that have been created specifically for this effort.

While most everything here will poof by Monday, the Hogwarts School realized by the Liquid Heat team, is one installation that will go up for auction to benefit the American Cancer Society and help to fund Cancer research.

...and the most expensive dress on the grid is... NPIRL - RFL reaps the rewards

Sometimes you are just in_the_news. Such is the case of Eshi Otawara this month, as she keeps knocking our socks off with her one hour builds , and the creation of CodeBastard Redgrave's new sim "Rouge..." but nothing could have prepared me for her latest.

Remember this dress?



We went wild in December when Eshi introduced us to this divine, very Not Possible in Real Life frock, which she created using fish hooks. Within days, she issued a limited edition in black, and it became an instant hit.

Fast forward! We are in the final days of this year's brilliantly successful in-world Relay for Life fundraiser, and Eshi wanted to do her part, so this afternoon she offered the very last of the black fishook dresses up for auction at an event hosted by Designers in Seclusion and organized by Alaska Metropolitan and Tigerlilly Koi.

I'm told that the bidding began and, per Eshi, "When the dress reached $150K, I got really excited... at $200K, I got nervous... and at $300K, I quit breathing. Finally, I cried!"

Two women got into a bidding war, but decided to join forces and put up all the money they had to get it: $460,000L!

The winners are Kay Fairey and Clarabelle Cazalet, two models for Premiere Modeling Management. When I asked if they were clothing designers, too, Clarabelle responded, "We're just really good clothes hangers and know how to accessorize!" Kay added, "We are getting ready to make our own fashion publication on the net."

Of course, I had to ask what in the world Clarabelle and Kay were going to do with a no-trans dress. Was Eshi going to give it to them transferable? "Yes, because they put up so much to get it, but under the condition that they can only transfer it to a third person if it is for another RFL auction next year," she replied.

8:52pm Update: Eshi has just learned that Kay Fairey won the auction outright, but decided that she will share it with her good friend Clara, knowing that Clara had wanted the dress for a long time. Such a happy ending!

Pixelated wheat buys real cows for families struggling against poverty and hunger - only $55 US dollars to go for a second cow

Update: Between yesterday and today, the amount raised by the wheat fields shot up to $1,015 US dollars, which places AM Radio in the third position of top fundraisers for Team Heifer. His new goal: 3 cows or $1,500 by Thanksgiving. Can he do it?

Think Second Life is a game? Think again...

On September 22, 2007, the avatar and content creator, AM Radio, set out some plots of wheat for sale on the land where his own, much celebrated virtual wheat field in Second Life sits, known as The Far Away. Teleport directly from here.



His idea was a simple one: all proceeds from each sale would be forwarded to Heifer International, an organization that works to end hunger and poverty by providing livestock and environmentally sound agricultural training to improve the lives of people who struggle daily for dependable sources of food and income.



His initial fundraising goal: $500 US dollars... enough to buy a heifer cow for a family. Today - six weeks since he began this project - he is just short $55 US dollars from his newest goal of buying not one, but two cows. In fact, even though all the funds have not yet posted on the Heifer website because they are still being transfered over via PayPal, AM Radio's virtual fundraiser ranks him as the fifth largest contributor in the Team Heifer program.



According to the Heifer International website:

"A good dairy cow can produce four gallons of milk a day - enough for a family to drink and share with neighbors. Milk protein transforms sick, malnourished children into healthy boys and girls. The sale of surplus milk earns money for school fees, medicine, clothing and home improvements.

And because a healthy cow can produce a calf every year, every gift will be passed on and eventually help an entire community move from poverty to self reliance."
