Your name in virtual worlds is your brand - Protect it on Google's Lively

Whether you intend to spend time on Google's new virtual world Lively or not, you'd best get over there and ensure that - at the very least - your virtual world name is protected. Grab an account at Lively in your Second Life® name and ensure that it is yours.

Unfortunately, it is too late for some people. Jurin Juran alerted me to this problem last night, after she discovered that someone had already taken jurin.juran. What kind of person would do such a thing? Geez.

My name at Lively is BettinaTizzy.

I too had this problem, but while I know nothing of Jurin's case I found that my name may have been taken because I once had a Google account in that name. VidalTripsa is reserved, and yet my current email address may have been waiting for me.

At least, that's my optimistic assessment. I dearly do hope no-one's running around with my name above their heads, as it's a frightfully rare one to think up accidentally.

Ah, Vidal... I hope that isn't the case and that you are correct. I should point out, though, that those evil doers would be running around with your name at their feet, which is where avatars' names are placed in Lively. An odd thing that, and not a feature I care for.

In Lively, right clicking on your profile will allow you to change the avatar name to ANY name you choose. I see problems with this.....Your original avatar name then only persists in the profile under "MY ID" yet the outward name can be anything you choose..even someone else's name...

pretty much "boo hiss" for no Mac version. But I suppose we always get the gaming shaft. :)

definitely joinging the mob booing & hissing @ Google for snubbing the Mac-using public.

I really can't see why they can let us into Google Earth, we can even use Sketchup, but not their little virtual world???

lameness abounds...

I'm not thrilled about even downloading a new set of spywear via google.. I don't trust google.. but yet I have a blogger and youtube account..Both with AlterEgoTrip as names.. I am very aware of the problems of branding via youtube and how people can go about bullying others and simply take the name by writing it in a different way and even take images by screen shots (via youtube).

I don't think involving one's self with google so closely protects anything.. but if you don't think that google is that bad, and like facebook and myspace, those are other options as proof of your vitual identity..

For me personally, I don't touch G-mail, facebook or anything else with huge security issues with a 10 foot pole..

@Thema : Turst me you're not missing out on anything, yet anyway.
I am very much surprized at Google's launch of something so primitive. Perhaps they felt they were missing out on the 3D Chat market, that is what I have seen so far. I found it very limited and not very user friendly.

I've seen this happen before between new mmorpgs, or 3d chat, the fastest off the mark take amusement in bagging the names of top or popular players.
I wouldn't worry unless you plan on leaving SL for Lively!
