I'm not much of a shopper these days, but the month-long Creators Stamp Rally (CSR2008) promotion that involves many of the stores where my Lindens end up anyway is fun. Even if you aren't into shopping, I promise you all sorts of good finds.

NPIRL fashion: What the heck is it?

I just launched a new Flickr group for Not Possible in Real Life (NPIRL) fashion: NPIRL Fashion - Not Possible in Real Life, and I'm realizing that describing this genre is not so easy, so I made a little video.



It's about fashion that clothes the avatar's body and...
* Defies the laws of gravity and physics in general
* Exposes the avatar's body to extreme heat or cold or exploding particles or sharp things
* Features rotating textures, electrified elements that a human could not withstand
* Multitasks and that, in addition to clothing the avatar, can do strange and wonderful things
* Includes elements (such as clouds or snakes or sunshine, for instance) that could never be used in Real Life

3star Tyne makes things I want when I'm in a special mood. Today was a day like that. Deep Sea Fluorescent Flower is a mermaid outfit, complete with skin and fins and wings, but I played with it. She gives you a lot of choices. I added my own electrified hair.

3star Tyne's Creeping Frog Princess

Kermit the Frog always makes me smile, but I like him best when he sings, "Someday we'll find it, that NPIRL connection... the builders, the dreamers, and me." Oh, wait... I'm the one who sings that! Figure I'm going to get some ribbitin' for that one... :) Eh!

Speaking of frogs, 3star Tyne, designer of several breathtaking outfits for women who embrace the Not Possible IRL mantra - including the much celebrated Glass House Mary outfit - brightened my morning today when she shared her newest creation with me... the Creeping Frog Princess ensemble.

I tried the gown on myself and found it to be ultra feminine and diaphanous, featuring a soft floral print, and a crown of flowers, too. Upon closer inspection, I realized that I had 3D green frogs leaping off my arm and chest and waist. Virtual jewelry and virtual nature!



You may be wondering to yourself, "how is this Not Possible IRL?" Glad you asked! I guarantee that I would not be standing still long enough to have a photograph taken if this were happening in Real Life.

Dear fashion designers of Second Life... we are desperately seeking fashion that would not be possible in real life

I understand that there is a solid market for clothing that emulates what we wear in real life, but aren't you a little bit tempted to really explore the possibilities that only the metaverse affords us?

Take this outfit - Glass House Mary - by NPIRL'er and designer/creator 3star Tyne, for instance. Every time I wear it, I am bombarded with requests for the name of the maker and the landmark. For this photo, I added a black modesty top, and omitted a couple of optional pieces. 3star Tyne's work is sold modifiable. Yusssh! *whistles and claps for mod perms!* I especially love the scripted bursts of stained glass shards that surround me when I wear it.

We took the red pill

IN FEBRUARY 2007, Larry Johnson (aka SL's Larry Pixel), CEO of the New Media Consortium, gave a speech entitled "Down the Rabbit Hole: Or how the NMC took the red pill, got a Second Life, and found love on the 3D web."

Dang, that's a GOOD title. I had to borrow a piece of it cause the thought keeps ringing in my brain. For those of us who didn't abandon SL after those first few bumbling, bungling days, and went on to grok that this is the arena where the action will unfold in the coming years, it turns out that the red pill was pure manna.

Celebrating that which is Not Possible IRL takes it one step further.

THIS just in...

NPIRL member Foolish Frost - master scripter and lead builder for Toxic Garden Rezzable - tp'ed us in last night for a zippy peek at the prototype for the Zero-G Spherical Ride. Can't reveal much, but suffice it to say that it involves riding a surfboard around and inside planet earth at a high rate of speed. Weeeeeee!

Foolish described his work as "building solutions." He said people ask him "is this possible?" and he finds out. Still no word on when the final reveal will take place.

ANGRYBETH SHORTBREAD

"I think, therefore I am frustrated." Thus begins NPIRL'er AngryBeth Shorthbread's profile, and our plunge into her scripted, multimedia world.

Here's the short list on AngryBeth:
* She's collaborative
* Her work is as much about the development journey as it is about the final piece. She doesn't mind letting you in on her work-in-progress.
* She is generous with her information. Grab her education tool freebies. Google her and you will find that she doesn't hesitate to explain the techniques she employed to accomplish each project.

AngryBeth collaborated with Brian Eno on his 77 Million Paintings 4-location show in SL, June 29 - July 1, 2007, which you can read about on her blog. 77 Million Paintings was produced by Cyrus Huffhines of blueair.tv, in cooperation with Alexander Rose, who oversaw the project, while AngryBeth built the installations.

She is behind The Collective - an ongoing research project of the Design for Digital Media Degree at Leeds College of Art and Design into the pedagogical and vocational value of SL.

You will find a good collection of her work at her studio, The Pencil Factory. Tp to The Port and look behind you for another teleporter to the Pencil Factory, and then:

Malls in SL can be wacky and most assuredly NPIRL:
