I am human. I am a machine. I am post-human. I am organic. I am synthetic. I am a better human.
I am the future. I am a series of devices and mechanisms and integrated circuits. I am also made of flesh.
I'm in the zone when I wear this avatar. Or is my avatar, any avatar, already my cyborg? In "The Cyborg's Dilemma: Progressive Embodiment in Virtual Environments," Frank Biocca asks how the sense of physical presence and our changing representations of the body in virtual environments affect our minds. As we drive and watch our avatars, embody them, are we not already part human, part machine?
This incredible avatar was created by Justen Jigsaw. Teleport to his shop directly from here.

Yes, we are machines. We have always been organic machines, and we are definitely, as a culture, part inorganic machine too, inching ever closer to being full on embodied cyborgs.
And I'm perfectly ok with that. Bring on the (technological) singularity ;)
Also, that avatar is FREAKING AMAZING. Thank you for being it to my attention!
Brilliant post Bettina!
And thank you for the reference to Frank Biocca's work, which I was not at all aware of.
:-)
To my knowledge, there is a man in the U.K. actively working to literally connect his brain to the internet. He already has the computer parts built into him for it and is continuing research with a team of individuals. Personally, I find that kind of connection frightening.
@Ruina - I do believe we are getting closer to the day when we will accept the idea of becoming bionic.
@Alpha - Thank you! I was fascinated with Frank Biocca's writing, which incredibly dates back to 1997. So ahead of his time.
@Green Dream - Like you, I find some aspects of this futurism disturbing, especially when they have to do with our brains. We'll have to wait and see how it all pans out.
i know the person who made that AV!!
they are awsome designers \o/
